GlennArt Farm Goals:  Restoring Community

Meeting the Goals of GlennArt Farm:  Mentorship

It has been a very busy year with animal health, milk production as well as a new phase of mentorship.  We pray about all efforts that are initiated with kids in the neighborhood.  From that point we enjoy our time with each young person who comes to us.

There are three levels of mentorship:  helpers (ages 10-15), workers (12-20), mentorship (16-21).     Helpers are kids who come in the mornings and evenings for short times,no longer than one hour.  Workers are kids who work at an hourly wage.  Mentorship means that GlennArt walks with youth for a season to aid them to obtain diplomas and full time work.

Starting in March of this year, Carolyn asked two young women, 17 and 19, to set up a mentorship agreement with the farm to offer some work hours and help them finish school.

We are also very supportive of Taquan Banner, a recent graduate of Northside Learning Center.  Taquan dearly desires to have a job.  GlennArt Farm is partnering with Northside Learning Center to offer him some farm work throughout the year as well as connect him to resources to help him obtain what he needs.

Taquan worked with our neighbor in the alley to cut back his grapevines.  He hauled them to the pasture for happy consumption.

Perilous Pastures Part 2

Again, the pasture produced some problems for us. One the girl twins, Patsy, was caught in a fence wire for a long time,  She keeps a scar on her leg to show it.

Gracie ate herself into a tomato wire cone and who knows how long she carried it around for the day.  We had to ask a fireman to cut it off so she could come home that night.

This photo shows Gracie happily leveraging a Chicago garbage bin to grab some grape leaves in the alley. Thankfully, she was not overly traumatized by being wired.

Okay a happy ending means eating.

Perilous Pastures

This website presents  small notes on goat health, a constant challenge for me every year. In 2016 the focus is on parasites in the pasture. Their effect has been powerful due to frequent rains and overgrazing on our one little pasture place on Waller Street. All goats carry parasite "loads" and they will never fully be free of these microscopic pests that suck blood through the stomach wall.  For that reason goats are very careful to eat only 8 inches or higher. When they are placed to graze in a pasture for a long time, they poop on grasses and eat them down lower than is healthy, and reinfect themselves more than normal.

This year Mercy contracted bottle jaw. She is a prime candidate for complications: a first-year milker, less than full grown, and birthed twins. Currently she is enjoying our back yard, both INSIDE the fenced in gardens as well as chewing on the apricot tree. (Open Veterinary Journal PMC4655771).  She developed swelling on her jaw or an edema which at one point passed to her throat. Dr. Vigil brought medicine and I administered vitamins and iron daily for a week. She has since lost the fluid on her jaw yet is too thin. We are working on plans for a better year in 2017.

Bottle Jaw is the last stage of anemia, with the animal too debilitated to eat. Mercy was still able to eat, and worked very hard to do so with the swelling. She tended to eat soft leaves instead of grain. We trimmed our apricot tree to accommodate her diet. She took total advantage of her freedom and marched through the corn crop.
