Urban Farming Mean Community:  Part Four

On May 26, GlennArt Farm hosted the crew from the Happy Apple Pie Shop.  This shop has continued to supply us with apple peels, egg shells for the chickens and other scraps that are useful to goat stomachs. Taquan Banner, a worker from the West Side neighborhood made the connection for us. He began to work at the Pie Shop about four months ago. He asked Michelle Mascaro, the manager, if GlennArt could have the scraps. Michelle was delighted to recycle the Pie Shop food waste. Please look for Happy Apple Pie Shop at their website:  happyapplepie.com

During their visit to the farm, we asked the employees to decide on the names for the then two youngest baby goats. Everyone enjoyed the farm tour and Oreo and Happy are officially christened.

Jay McAllister has been a great help to us.  He contacted me a few years ago and asked if he could work with us. He is a rare person in that he has many talents for the city, yet was raised on a farm in Indiana. Jay set up our fences at the Waller Pasture and set in the gates.

To learn more about Jay and his Chicago standup comedy, follow him on Facebook—where he's known as J.P. McAllister.

GlennArt Farm survives on the grace and work of volunteers. Cristina Hernandez provided us with two weeks of hard work and help. She came to us as a WWOOFer, traveling through many farms across these United States. Her background in animal behavior was helpful in our goat yoga planning. She weighed kids, hauled manure, and set up the garden for planting. THANK YOU Cristiana for your help. Safe travels back to California.

Urban Farming Means Community: Part One

This is our year of transition in so many areas.  We are applying for Animal Welfare Certification for our goats. In order to do anything well, we must have a veterinarian that visits.  Dr.  Aaron Vigil has been extremely helpful in supporting our efforts.  This photo was taken with David when he came on a Saturday morning to provide painkillers to de-horn the baby goats.    This effort to provide our kids with the least stressful process is a requirement of the standards Animal Welfare Certification.

Thank you, Dr. Vigil!!!
